A week of traveling followed by a weekend of (needed, welcome) time with friends has left me up against a self-imposed deadline with nothing to show for it. The great thing about not taking money for my words is that it means that I’m the only one in control of the standards around here. When you set your own standard, you’re always up to it.
I’ve said before that I’m a massive fan of cross-genre covers. “Accident Prone” is already a track that can level me if it hits me at the right time or in the right mood. Julien Baker’s heartfelt, mournful rendition draws the emotional core out of the song in a way changes the whole tenor of it. She strips the last little bits of punk irony away from it and leaves it honest and quaking on the floor.
Fortunately, we also have the Ghost Wolves to revive our spirits. I’ve been going through some, shall we say “professional changes” recently, and this has felt both apt and energizing. My efforts to make it the official song of my local union chapter have so far been unsuccessful.
